Abstract

This book examines the complex relations between Joseon Korea (1392–1910) and Ming/Qing China in history, and reveals their contemporary implications for the nature of a China-dominated order in East Asia and the relations between China and the middle powers in the region. Instead of relying on the works that offer over-generalized conclusions based on information drawn from secondary sources, this book provides a much more nuanced account of the Koreans’ experience of managing their relations with the great powers by analyzing the first-hand evidence documented by the Joseon historiographers related to the major events in Joseon–Ming relations, Joseon’s response to power transition from Ming to Qing, and Joseon–Qing relations. In East Asia today where the middle powers are facing the rise of China and a trilateral dilemma as a result of the Sino–US rivalry in the region, what history can tell us is of significant value to scholars, policy advisers, and policymakers.

Abstract

This book defines China’s road towards modernization with Chinese characteristics by systematically examining a typical Chinese political process – the National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), during which diverse opinions are collected and a unified political consensus is formed. The author provides a detailed introduction to the background of and preparations for the 18th National Congress of CPC, as well as his personal experience of it as an attending representative.  In addition, the book addresses a key problem, namely how China’s leadership handover procedure gradually evolved into the current collective handover procedure, by analyzing its developmental history. The question of “how to implement China’s leadership handover” is particularly meaningful, as it reflects the development of China’s political system, and is also essential to the CPC flourishing and China’s long-term prosperity. The author’s personal experiences at the 18th National Congress made it possible to fully investigate the leadership handover procedure between Hu Jintao and Xi Jinping. Lastly, the book provides a detailed description of one highlight of the 18th CPC National Congress – the focus on ecological culture and green development – and discusses China’s dream and its implications for history and the world.

Abstract

Why have some states in the developing world been more successful at facilitating industrialization than others? Challenging theories that privilege industrial policy and colonial legacies, this book focuses on state structure and the politics of state formation, arguing that a cohesive state structure is as important to developmental success as effective industrial policy. Based on a comparison of six Asian cases, including both capitalist and socialist states with varying structural cohesion, Tuong Vu proves that it is state formation politics rather than colonial legacies that have had decisive and lasting impacts on the structures of emerging states. His cross-national comparison of South Korea, Vietnam, Republican and Maoist China, and Sukarno's and Suharto's Indonesia, which is augmented by in-depth analyses of state formation processes in Vietnam and Indonesia, is an important contribution to understanding the dynamics of state formation and economic development in Asia.

Abstract

This book examines the driving forces behind national-level politics, changes to the judiciary, social control, economic reform, environmental protection, urban development, the management of ethnic relations, as well as foreign and security policy orientation in China under Xi Jinping. It explains Xi's ambition, examines the limitations he has to confront, and maps the direction of reform he pursues. The book starts off by examining how the consultative Leninist nature of the political system continues to shape politics and policy in China under Xi, and what the China dream Xi advocates actually entails domestically and beyond China. It ends by highlighting the megatrends that will prevail in the decade when Xi is expected to stay in power. The book also includes contributions from five Central Party School professors whose views are taken seriously by the Chinese leadership.
